Forum: general Subject: Using archive.org for Torrent seeding ?

I have created some Torrents from files published on the Internet Archive.
But i have added an direct "http seed" Link into the .torrent file, so if an client tries do download this torrent the original archive.org http server will be used as an P2P seed.

This means filesharers are Downloading an file from archive.org and from other P2P users at the same time.

As example: Someone is Downloading a Archive.org file wich has a size of 1000MB.
So 500 MB will be downloaded from archive.org and the other 500MB from peers within the filesharing network.
So this method may save much Bandwith for archive.org and helps to reduce traffic costs.

If you want to try how this method works for you just download the sample torrent file i have created.
I have created this sample Torrent for the this file:

http://www.archive.org/details/gov.ntis.ava11757vnb1

You can Download the torrent here:

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4436834/Target_for_Today_-_WW2_Documantary

There are allready some other P2P sources availible wich also seed this file and will help reduce traffic on the archive.org server.

For Downloading i recomend to use an torrent client wich supports direct http seeds such as utorrent, free downloadmanager or getright. Linux/Mac users can use Transmission.

So if this sample worked well, why not publishing all big archive.org files as torrent using the original http url as P2P seed ?

I think this might be important because the archive can save much traffic and it will be an nice proof that P2P also can be used for 100% legal purposes.
So if Archive.org uses Torrent to legaly publish Public Domain files the archive can become an big player in the fight for net neutrality and against censorship of P2P networks.

This will not require any extra costs because the existing http or ftp web infrastructure of archive.org is used for the P2P network, so there is no need for additional torrent servers or something like that.

Hey dark apitude
when i try to access torrent proxy it is giving me an error: The URL has been blocked as per the instructions of the Competent Government Authority in compliance to the orders of Court of Law.

after spending more then 30min i found these two articles which helped me find the working piratebay proxy site.

Good idea, utorrent is the best client and uses very little cpu.

It doesn't seem like there are ever any seeds for the torrents I try to download, even the most recent releases. It would make it a lot easier when selecting and downloading favorite tracks or entire shows. I use uTorrent 1.6.1 Build 490
